Redeemer’s Health Village, RVH, has announced plans to establish a robotic surgery academy aimed at building a skilled workforce to support the hospital’s expanding robotic surgery programme.

Dr Ademola Dada, Chief Executive Officer of RHV, disclosed this in Lagos while unveiling the institution’s robotic surgery service, developed in partnership with RoboMed Global.

The academy, to be located at RHV in Redemption City, will provide structured training for clinicians and other professionals involved in robotic-assisted surgery.

According to Dada, the academy will adopt a five-stage capacity-building framework for referring clinicians and their teams, comprising foundation training, skills development, clinical observership, advanced training, and collaborative practice and research.

He said the initiative addresses one of the major requirements for the sustainable adoption of robotic surgery — the availability of trained professionals who can operate, assist with, and maintain the technology.

“The robotic academy, when launched, will create a pipeline of robotics professionals, forming part of efforts to develop the skills and expertise required to support robotic surgery services,” Dada said.

He added that the programme would create training opportunities while developing a sustainable pool of professionals capable of supporting robotic surgery operations.

The planned initiative comes as robotic-assisted surgery gains a foothold in Nigeria. RoboMed Academy, the training arm of RoboMed Global, says its programmes are designed for surgeons, perioperative nurses, biomedical engineers and hospital teams, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of robotic surgery.

Its training model combines theoretical instruction, simulation, clinical observation, hands-on training and supervised cases, with emphasis on structured credentialing and supervised clinical practice before independent robotic surgery.

For surgeons, the published pathway includes pre-technology education, simulation and live-case observation, technology training and subsequent proctored procedures.

RoboMed Global and its partneRedeemer’srs have previously deployed the Toumai MT-1000 robotic surgical platform in Nigeria. According to the Society of Robotic Surgery’s 2026 conference materials, the platform received regulatory approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control on Dec. 22, 2025 — described as the first robotic surgical platform approved for clinical use in West Africa.

The Toumai system is designed for minimally invasive procedures across specialities including urology, gynaecology and general surgery. It combines three-dimensional visualisation with surgeon-controlled robotic instruments to enhance precision and control during procedures.

The development positions RHV among Nigerian institutions seeking to expand access to advanced surgical care locally. Beyond the equipment, the planned academy underscores the need for sustained investment in surgeons, nurses, biomedical engineers and other operating-room personnel as robotic surgery expands.

RoboMed Academy says its broader objective is to establish standardised training and certification while developing local expertise in robotic and minimally invasive surgery.

For RHV, the academy is expected to serve as a critical component of its robotic surgery programme, ensuring the introduction of advanced surgical technology is matched by the training and expertise required for its safe and effective use.

The launch on Oct. 22 is expected to mark the next phase of RHV’s investment in robotic surgery, as the institution seeks to build local capacity alongside the expansion of technology-driven surgical services.
