Nigeria senior women’s volleyball team secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Ghana on Wednesday at the ongoing 2026 African Senior Nations Volleyball Championship in Kenya.

The dramatic five-set encounter saw the Nigerian side overcome a determined Ghanaian team 25-21, 21-25, 25-11, 11-25, 18-16 in a closely contested West African battle.

The team started strongly, taking the opening set 25-21 to gain an early advantage. Ghana responded in the second set, matching the scoreline to level the contest at 1-1.

The Nigerian side regained control in the third set, producing an impressive display to win 25-11 and move within one set of securing the match.

However, Ghana refused to surrender and fought back strongly in the fourth set. The Ghanaians dominated the set 25-11, forcing the encounter into a decisive fifth set.

The final set provided the most thrilling moment of the match, with both teams battling intensely for every point. The Nigerian women eventually held their nerve to edge Ghana 18-16 and complete a 3-2 victory.

The win keeps the team in second position in Group C and strengthens its position ahead of the final group-stage fixture against Cameroon on Thursday.

The clash with Cameroon will be another important test for the Nigerian side as it looks to finish the group stage strongly and advance its campaign at the continental championship.

The victory over Ghana also highlights the team’s resilience after losing the fourth set and being forced to play a deciding fifth set.

The 2026 Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship is significant beyond the continental competition, serving as part of the qualification pathway for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the 2027 FIVB Women’s World Championship.

With the group stage nearing its conclusion, the Nigerian women will now turn their attention to Cameroon, hoping to secure another positive result and maintain their push for success at the tournament.
