DNA evidence has linked a 22-year-old South African man to the rape of his biological mother, leading to his conviction and a 20-year prison sentence.

The Carnarvon Regional Court in the Northern Cape handed down the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to raping his 42-year-old mother at their home in Vosburg in November 2025.

According to evidence presented in court, the incident occurred on November 23, 2025, after the victim had been drinking alcohol with her partner before going to bed. The accused had also reportedly been drinking at a friend’s residence before returning home.

The court heard that the accused found his mother and her partner asleep when he arrived. He then removed his mother’s clothing and sexually assaulted her while she was asleep.

The woman reportedly woke up during the assault and discovered her son on top of her. After she confronted him, the accused fled the house. The victim later told her partner what had happened, and the incident was reported to the police.

The accused initially denied the allegation following his arrest. However, DNA evidence reportedly linked him to the sexual assault. He subsequently pleaded guilty when confronted with the evidence.

During sentencing, the prosecution urged the court to impose a substantial custodial sentence, highlighting the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the victim was the accused’s biological mother.

The State argued that the accused had violated his mother’s dignity and bodily integrity while taking advantage of her vulnerable condition.

The court was also informed that the accused had a previous conviction and had only recently been released on parole.

In her victim-impact statement, the woman described the assault as a devastating betrayal, particularly because the perpetrator was her own son.

The prosecution maintained that the circumstances of the case warranted a lengthy prison sentence. The Carnarvon Regional Court subsequently sentenced the 22-year-old to 20 years’ direct imprisonment.

The case comes amid South Africa’s ongoing struggle with gender-based violence and sexual offences, including crimes committed against vulnerable victims by people known to them.

Authorities continue to encourage victims of sexual violence to report offences to law-enforcement agencies and seek support from relevant services.
