Nigeria’s D’Tigress have received the final cash component of the presidential reward promised to the team following their historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
The Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission, NSC, paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player and $50,000 to each official, completing the cash aspect of the reward package.
The NSC said the payments were made on September 9, 2026, with all beneficiaries confirming receipt. The payment fulfils President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to reward D’Tigress after they extended their dominance of African women’s basketball by winning a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.
Beyond the cash payment, the presidential reward package included three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours of the Order of the Niger.
The NSC said beneficiaries received the title documents, including Certificates of Occupancy for the apartments, as well as their national honours certificates in February 2026. According to the commission, the documents were signed by President Tinubu.
Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Information and Public Relations at the NSC, said in a statement that the latest payment had completed all aspects of the presidential reward package.

D’Tigress also acknowledged the payment through their official X account on Thursday with a brief message: “Presidential reward acknowledged.”
The NSC said the reward was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to recognize exceptional performances by Nigerian athletes and prioritize their welfare.
D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive AfroBasket triumph in 2025 further strengthened their status as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.
The team’s achievement also marked another major milestone in Nigeria’s basketball history, following years of continental success.
The Federal Government has also begun fulfilling a similar reward promise to the Super Falcons following their triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Falcons have received their apartment title documents and national honours, while their cash reward of the naira equivalent of $100,000 per player and $50,000 per official is expected before their next official engagements.
