Former Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris has reportedly died at the age of 77 in the United Kingdom, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and other political figures mourning the former governor.
Idris reportedly passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following a protracted illness, according to family sources cited in early reports. Details surrounding his death remain limited, while condolences have continued to reach his family.
Governor Ododo has expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family, describing Idris as a prominent figure who made meaningful contributions to politics and business.
Ibrahim Idris served as governor of Kogi State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party from 2003 to 2012, making him one of the state’s longest-serving civilian governors.
He first assumed office on May 29, 2003, after defeating the then-incumbent governor, Abubakar Audu, in the governorship election.
Although Idris was declared the winner of the 2007 governorship election, the result was later nullified following a legal challenge over the exclusion of Audu from the election.
A fresh election was subsequently held in March 2008, which Idris won, enabling him to continue in office until January 2012.

Beyond politics, Idris was known for his involvement in business, including ventures in construction, furniture manufacturing and hospitality. His career in both business and public service contributed to his prominence in Kogi State and beyond.
In his condolence message, Governor Ododo highlighted the former governor’s contributions to politics and business, while reflecting on the relationship between the two men.
Following the announcement of Idris’ death, Governor Ododo declared a three-day mourning period in honour of the former governor and directed that the national and Kogi State flags be flown at half-mast across government offices and designated public institutions in the state.
The governor also announced that Idris would receive a state burial, with the Kogi State Government taking responsibility for the burial arrangements.
Ododo described the former governor as an eminent son of Kogi State who devoted a significant part of his life to public service.
He noted that Idris’ years in office formed an important chapter in the political and developmental history of the state.
The governor extended his condolences to the Idris family, friends, associates and others mourning the former leader.
As tributes continue to emerge, further details regarding the circumstances of Idris’ death and burial arrangements are expected to be released by his family.
