The incident, which occurred at about 6:15am, triggered panic among residents and traders as flames spread through adjoining structures. The vehicle involved was completely burnt, while the driver and a child were rescued from the scene.
The Federal Fire Service, FCT Command, said its firefighters and other emergency responders arrived at the scene at about 6:30am and contained the fire, preventing what it described as a potentially major and destructive gas explosion.
“Federal Fire Service, FCT Command firefighters and other emergency responders today, Sunday 27th September 2026, at about 6:30am swiftly responded to a gas fire at Liberty Junction, Kubwa, Abuja, averting what would have been a major destructive gas explosion,” the command said in a statement.
The fire service also deployed additional water tankers to the scene, while the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and police personnel joined the emergency response.
NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office said it activated relevant response agencies after receiving a distress alert at about 6:20am.
NEMA said the fire was brought under control at about 7:45am, after which the affected area was dampened to reduce the risk of a secondary fire or explosion. The emergency operation was concluded at about 8:45am, according to the agency’s reported account of the response.

The explosion affected businesses around the gas outlet, with at least nine shops reportedly damaged. A nearby police traffic post was also displaced, while the force of the blast scattered debris around the area. The vehicle that reportedly crashed into the facility was destroyed by the ensuing fire.
Residents in nearby communities, including Dantata Estate, said the blast was loud enough to wake people from sleep. Some residents also reported feeling their buildings shake from the impact.
Early reports attributed the incident to a vehicle crashing into the gas outlet, but details surrounding how the collision occurred and what specifically triggered the explosion remained under investigation.
Some eyewitness accounts circulated on social media alleged that a motorist was driving against traffic before crashing into the facility, although that claim had not been independently verified.
Reports later citing NEMA said no death was recorded in the incident. The driver was reportedly injured and taken to a medical facility for treatment, while the child in the vehicle was also rescued.
The incident caused disruption around the Liberty Junction corridor as emergency vehicles occupied portions of the road and security personnel worked to secure the area. Traffic gradually returned to normal after the fire was extinguished and the immediate danger was contained.
NEMA urged relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure that gas facilities comply with prescribed safety standards, particularly in densely populated areas, to reduce the risk of similar incidents and protect lives and property.
