Veteran Journalist, Christiane Amanpour, has announced her planned departure from the Cable News Network, CNN, in 2027.
The 68-year-old chief international anchor announced her decision on Monday, describing her time at CNN as “43 fantastic years” and expressing enthusiasm for new professional opportunities.
Amanpour began working for CNN in 1983 as an assistant on the international news desk, and went on to become one of the network’s best-known correspondents, often reporting on conflicts and wars.
Since 2009, Amanpour has helmed her flagship interview program on CNN International, where she has engaged with prominent political leaders and delivered frontline reports from many of the world’s major conflict zones.
Her departure will be preceded by a gradual scaling back of her presenting duties, beginning with an already reduced schedule in January 2025 and shifting to a weekly format in January 2027.
The program is set to conclude in May while she remains with CNN as a reporter until June.

CNN chairman Mark Thompson revealed he had been in discussions with Amanpour about her plans for several months, praising her stature in the profession and describing her as “one of the most trusted and beloved journalists anywhere.”
Thompson also commended her decades of international reporting, adding that CNN would recognise her contributions before she leaves the network.
Looking back on her career, Amanpour cited her coverage of major global events, including the First Gulf War, the Bosnian War, the genocide in Rwanda, the conflicts in Afghanistan and Ukraine, and developments in Iran.
She expressed gratitude to the journalists, production teams, and field crews who supported her throughout her career, noting that their shared commitment to truth, evidence, and humanity profoundly shaped her reporting style.
Although she is preparing to leave her regular role at CNN, Amanpour said she remained committed to the network’s mission of independent journalism as she looks towards the next phase of her career.
Amanpour will continue her podcast The Ex Files, co-hosted with her ex-husband Jamie Rubin, where the two explore global affairs and personal reflections.
The show allows her to remain engaged in public discourse even after stepping away from television.
