The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as the neighbouring country reorganises its security after a coup attempt.
The approval, granted on Tuesday during a session of the Committee of the Whole, followed the reading of a formal request transmitted by the president and presented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In the letter, Tinubu described the situation in Benin as an “attempted unconstitutional seizure of power” that has disrupted democratic institutions in the West African nation.
He explained that the Beninese government had asked Nigeria for urgent air support to counter the emerging threat.
The request was made in line with Section 5(5), Part 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates Senate approval before Nigerian troops can be deployed outside the country.
Tinubu noted that he sought the authorisation after consultations with the National Defence Council.
He emphasised Nigeria’s regional responsibilities, its long-standing relations with Benin, and the principles of collective security under ECOWAS.

“The Government of the Republic of Benin is currently faced with an attempted unconstitutional seizure of power and the destabilisation of democratic institutions,” the letter stated. “Considering our close ties and the urgent need for exceptional air support, it is our duty to provide assistance.”
Following the Senate’s approval, Akpabio commended the prompt support from lawmakers, describing the president’s decision as timely and constitutional.
“He is acting constitutionally, and I want to thank my colleagues for giving approval without much debate,” Akpabio said. “This is a step in the right direction. The impact of this crisis on Nigeria, especially our borders, would have been severe. We commend the president for rising to the occasion.”
The Senate president added that the letter of consent would be transmitted to the president immediately.
With the approval, Nigeria is set to provide the requested military assistance as Benin works to restore stability and protect its democratic institutions.
