The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is set to publish the final list of candidates for the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on the 10th of October.

The publication is part of the commission’s revised timetable for the elections and will follow the completion of nomination, withdrawal, substitution and submission processes by political parties.

Political parties submitted nomination forms for governorship and State House of Assembly candidates between July 18 and August 8.

INEC scheduled August 20 for the publication of the personal particulars of the nominated candidates, while public campaigns for the two categories of elections began on September 9.

The deadline for the withdrawal or replacement of candidates was September 19, while September 26 was fixed as the final date for political parties to submit relevant nomination forms to the commission.

With the nomination and substitution processes completed, INEC will publish the final list on October 10.

The governorship election will hold in 28 states as part of the 2027 electoral cycle.

The states are Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Kwara, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto.

Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Bayelsa, Anambra, Imo and Kogi will not hold governorship elections in 2027 because their governorship polls took place at different points in Nigeria’s staggered electoral cycle.

However, State House of Assembly elections will hold across all 36 states.

INEC has scheduled February 6, 2027, for the governorship and State House of Assembly elections. The polls were brought forward from the earlier March 6 date under the revised timetable.

Political parties and candidates are expected to conclude public campaigns by February 4, two days before the elections.

The presidential and National Assembly elections will take place earlier on January 16, 2027.

The October 10 publication will establish the candidates formally recognized by INEC for the February 6 governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

The earlier publication of candidates’ personal particulars did not represent the final slate because parties could still withdraw or replace candidates before the applicable deadlines.

The final list will therefore reflect the candidates who remain eligible to contest the two categories of elections after the completion of the nomination and substitution processes.

With campaigns already underway, the publication will provide voters and political stakeholders with the official list of candidates for the February 2027 polls.
