The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has commenced a livelihood recovery programme for 653 households affected by the 2025 floods in Kebbi State, with beneficiaries receiving empowerment equipment and food assistance to help them rebuild their means of livelihood.

The intervention is being implemented through the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, as part of the Federal Government’s Presidential Post-Flood Intervention Programme approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Details of the programme were contained in a statement issued by NEMA spokesperson, Manzo Ezekiel, following the inauguration of the initiative in Birnin Kebbi.

Speaking at the event, NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar, represented by the agency’s Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Abbani Garki, said the intervention was designed to support affected families beyond emergency relief by helping them regain sustainable sources of income.

According to her, the programme is intended to complement previous humanitarian assistance provided to flood victims while accelerating recovery efforts in impacted communities.

“The programme was designed to move affected households beyond immediate relief towards sustainable livelihood recovery,” she said.

Umar explained that the support package would help beneficiaries restart small businesses, engage in productive economic activities and improve their household welfare.

She further noted that the initiative would not be limited to Kebbi State, adding that it would be implemented across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the NEMA boss, the intervention demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting disaster-affected communities through humanitarian assistance, livelihood restoration and disaster risk reduction measures.

She added that the agency was working closely with State Emergency Management Agencies, SEMAs, relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies, local government authorities and security agencies to ensure transparent and equitable distribution of the support items.

Umar urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the equipment provided, stressing that the intervention was aimed at helping households regain financial stability and improve their economic well-being.

In his remarks, Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, represented by the Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Aliyu Umar, commended the Federal Government for its continued support for communities affected by natural disasters.

The governor expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and NEMA for what he described as sustained interventions that would contribute significantly to the recovery of vulnerable households across the state.

Similarly, the Emir of Gwandu, Muhammadu Bashar, represented by Sadiq Ibrahim-Saad, praised both the Federal Government and NEMA for the initiative, urging beneficiaries to utilize the support effectively to rebuild their livelihoods.

Ahead of the distribution exercise, NEMA officials inspected the relief and livelihood empowerment items stored at the agency’s warehouse.

The items earmarked for distribution include sewing machines, grinding machines, cargo tricycles and assorted food supplies intended to help beneficiaries restore their economic activities and improve their living conditions.
