The Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Jabi in Abuja, Prof Sa’ad Ahmed, has disclosed that 51 healthcare professionals had resigned from the institution since the beginning of 2023.

This revelation was made by the Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Sa’ad Ahmed, during a visit by the House Committee on Health Institutions for an oversight role.
According to Prof. Ahmed, the brain drain has adversely affected various departments in the hospital.
He explained that they are currently facing a shortage of healthcare professionals in the Ear, Nose, and Throat department, as well as in neurology, cardiology, and physiotherapy.
The loss of staff is posing challenges to providing adequate services in these areas.
Prof. Ahmed highlighted the difficulties in quickly replacing the departing staff with individuals of the same level of experience.
The continuous loss of healthcare professionals will likely have a lasting impact on the hospital’s ability to deliver quality medical services.
However, the committee has pledged to decrease the number of Nigerians leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad for medical treatment, as well as health workers.
Amos Magaji, the committee’s chairman, stated that the group was also attempting to guarantee that the hospital received an additional parcel of land so that it could grow its medical offerings.
“On the issue of budget for health, everyone knows that the entire budget for this country is not there, and the budget for health is something to look into, we are doing everything to ensure that if the nation prospers, the budget for the nation will improve,” he stated, indicating that the committee will concentrate on improving the budgetary allocation for the health sector.
