President Bola Tinubu, at the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has lauded the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative spearheaded by Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Tinubu emphasized that this global collaboration was crucial in addressing hunger and poverty—two of the world’s most pressing challenges.

He described the alliance as a visionary step that sends a powerful message of solidarity to vulnerable populations across the world. Tinubu noted that by fostering collaboration between governments, international organizations, and civil society, the initiative addresses both immediate needs and the underlying causes of hunger and poverty.

Drawing a parallel to Nigeria’s own development agenda, Tinubu expressed that Nigeria’s endorsement of the alliance marked a significant step in its efforts to tackle hunger and poverty through international cooperation. He highlighted the importance of SDG 1 (eradicating poverty) and SDG 2 (achieving zero hunger) in Nigeria’s domestic policies, underscoring that Nigeria’s support for the alliance would drive progress in these areas.

Additionally, Tinubu called for urgent reform of the United Nations Security Council to ensure it reflects global diversity, emphasizing that Africa deserves two permanent seats. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to represent the continent in this capacity.

The Nigerian leader also addressed global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change, pointing out the need for a more inclusive international tax system that benefits developing countries. He urged the G20 to support reforms that would address these imbalances, particularly in taxation and sovereign debt, to help bridge the gap between the Global North and South.

Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to SDG 2030 targets and global cooperation through active participation in the G20.
