The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has postponed its 99th National Executive Council, NEC, meeting, initially set for November 28, 2024.

This decision, announced in a statement by the party’s National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, was taken to allow party leaders to attend the funeral of Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom State.

The funeral, scheduled for November 27-29, 2024, coincides with the earlier NEC meeting dates. The PDP’s National Working Committee, NWC, expressed the need to support Governor Umo Eno during this period.

Meanwhile, the North Central caucus of the PDP has expressed strong opposition to the indefinite postponement of the NEC meeting.

The meeting, originally planned for August, has faced several reschedules, with new dates yet to be announced. The NWC has apologized for any inconvenience caused to NEC members, emphasizing the importance of standing in solidarity with Governor Eno.

This postponement marks yet another in a series of delays since the NEC meeting was first set for August 2024. Notably, PDP’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, is facing mounting criticism and allegations of strategic delays to maintain his position, backed by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

Kola Ologbondiyan, a prominent North Central NEC member, criticized the lack of adherence to the PDP Constitution’s succession plan, calling for the rightful appointment of a permanent National Chairman. He emphasized that failing to resolve these leadership issues could harm both the party and Nigeria’s political future.
