The Federal Capital Territory , FCT, Police Command has arrested Khadija Ali, a woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby along a bush path in Mpape, Abuja.

On January 3, 2025, around 10:00 a.m., police officers from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section responded to a distress call and discovered the infant, believed to be just one day old, wrapped in a cloth.

The baby was found near the uncompleted Red Bricks Market, close to Crush Rock.

A statement issued by the police’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed that the baby was quickly rescued and taken to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre for medical attention.

Doctors confirmed the infant was in stable condition.

Adeh further explained that following a tip-off from local residents, Khadija Ali was apprehended.

During questioning, she admitted to abandoning her child, explaining that she was unable to care for the baby after her husband had left her.

The police condemned the act, calling it a severe violation of the child’s rights.

Ali is set to be charged under Sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act of 2003.

The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and announced that the child would be transferred to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care.

Ali, meanwhile, will face legal consequences once investigations are concluded.
