Inmates at Correctional Centres can now be captured on the National Identity Platform courtesy  of a collaboration  between the National Identity Management Commission ,NIMC, and the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS.

This move aims to include inmates in national development plans, enhance their security, and facilitate their recapture in the event of jailbreaks.

The request for the licence was made by Acting Controller General of NCoS, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, during a visit to the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Nwakuche emphasized that the NIN registration would ensure that inmates, including those awaiting trial, are integrated into the country’s national planning, census, and other vital development initiatives.

“Many inmates have attained higher education, including university degrees, Masters, and PhDs. These individuals should not be excluded from contributing to the nation’s development,” Nwakuche said, highlighting the importance of their participation in national projects.

NIMC Director-General, Coker-Odusote, welcomed the partnership, noting that NIN had become critical for various national programs, including student loans and financial inclusion through the linkage of bank accounts.

She praised the NCoS’s commitment to reforms within the correctional system and assured them of full support in carrying out their mandate.

Coker-Odusote also noted that NIMC’s collaborations with other agencies, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, were vital to the successful delivery of the country’s digital identity and national development goals.
