A bright young mind from Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, has taken the spotlight in Nigeria’s scientific community. Sekibo Tamundodumotein, a 15-year-old student, has been named the overall winner of the 2025 774-Young Nigerian Scientist Presidential Award, 774-YONSPA.

Tamundodumotein secured the top position after competing in the national final examination alongside 29 other students from across the country. The Chief Examiner, Prof. Uno Uno, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, announced his victory in Abuja on Monday.

Daboer Deaane of St. Augustine’s College, Plateau State, and Shonibare Adedeji of Surulere Senior Secondary School, Lagos State, clinched second and third positions, respectively.

The 774-YONSPA, an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, aims to foster interest in Science, Technology, and Innovation, STI, among Nigerian youths.

Speaking at the event, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, emphasized the need for urgent investment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, STEM, education to drive economic growth.

“In this 21st century, critical thinking and skill development are essential for research, inventions, and innovations,” she stated.

Nko-Asanye, represented by Malam Baba Ibrahim, Director of Human Resources, said the competition is part of efforts to build a new generation of scientists who will transform Nigeria’s technological landscape.

She highlighted the dangers of over-reliance on imports, stressing that local scientific advancements could strengthen the economy and create more job opportunities.

The winners will be honored with a Presidential handshake at the 2025 Technology and Innovation Expo. They will also receive cash prizes and scholarships to study at any Nigerian university of their choice.

Mr. Ronald Ukpong, Director of Science and Technology Promotion, reiterated the programme’s goal of producing world-class scientists and technologists while encouraging states and local governments to invest in STEM education for Nigerian youths.
