The Islamic morality police in Kano, Hisbah Board, has arrested several young men for allegedly failing to observe the fast on the first day of Ramadan, which began on March 1, 2025.

Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, the Board’s Deputy Commander General, confirmed the arrests and reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing Sharia law throughout the month of Ramadan.

In addition to the fasting violations, the Hisbah Board also conducted a separate operation targeting individuals with what it called “indecent haircuts.” Approximately 60 people were arrested for violating Islamic law and local cultural norms regarding personal appearance.

The Board also apprehended commercial tricycle (Keke Napep) riders for allegedly allowing male and female passengers to mix in their vehicles.

The Hisbah Board has vowed to enforce strict regulations on such practices during the Ramadan period.

These actions follow a similar operation in March 2024 when the Hisbah Board arrested at least 11 individuals, including a woman selling groundnuts, for eating during the fasting hours of Ramadan.

Hisbah spokesman Lawal Fagge confirmed the arrests, explaining that the individuals were later released after swearing an oath not to intentionally skip fasting again.

Fagge clarified that the Hisbah Board only targets Muslims for fasting violations, and non-Muslims are exempt from these operations unless they are caught preparing food for Muslims who are supposed to be fasting.
