The crisis rocking Rivers State took a new turn on Monday as the state House of Assembly gave Governor Siminalayi Fubara 48 hours to present the 2025 budget. The lawmakers issued the directive during plenary in Port Harcourt, intensifying the ongoing power struggle between the governor and his political rivals.
The legislative demand comes amid a prolonged face-off between Fubara and a faction of the Assembly, with tensions heightened over control of the state’s financial resources. The crisis, which began with the defection of 27 lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike, has led to legal battles, conflicting legislative sessions, and federal intervention.
Efforts to resolve the impasse saw President Bola Tinubu initiate a peace deal that included the re-presentation of the state budget. However, the rift remains unresolved, with both sides asserting authority over legislative and executive functions.

The ultimatum raises concerns over governance and financial stability in the state. A recent court ruling placed Rivers State’s federal allocations on hold pending the passage of a legitimate budget.
With the new deadline in place, political observers are watching closely to see how the governor will respond and whether the Assembly will escalate its actions should the ultimatum expire without compliance.
The unfolding drama underscores the deep-seated struggle for power in Rivers State, leaving citizens anxious about the fate of governance and development in the coming months.
