The Super Falcons have maintained their position as Africa’s top women’s football team in the latest FIFA rankings, released on Thursday.

Despite a period of inactivity between December and now, the nine-time African champions remain 36th globally.

Their dominance in Africa remains unchallenged, as their closest rivals have experienced drops in the rankings.

South Africa, the reigning WAFCON champions, hold second place in Africa but have dropped four spots globally, now sitting at 54th.

Morocco ranks third on the continent, occupying 60th place worldwide, while Zambia, despite a two-spot fall to 64th, retain their place as the fourth-best African team.

The rankings come ahead of the 2024 WAFCON tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 25-26, where the Super Falcons will seek their 10th continental title, having finished fourth in the previous edition in 2022.

South Africa, Morocco, and Zambia will be strong contenders for the crown, aiming to thwart Nigeria’s hopes for another title.

On the global stage, the United States remains the top-ranked team, with world champions Spain in second. Germany and England maintain third and fourth places, while Japan has risen to fifth, pushing Sweden to sixth.

In Africa, Kenya made significant progress, jumping seven spots to 142nd, while Tunisia saw the largest decline, dropping 11 places to 89th. Djibouti reached their highest-ever ranking, climbing to 195th.

The next FIFA women’s world rankings will be released on June 12, with the Super Falcons hoping to improve their position before the highly anticipated WAFCON tournament.
