The Rivers Restoration Movement, RRM, has called for the arrest of prominent Ijaw leaders over alleged threats to disrupt oil production if Governor Siminalayi Fubara is impeached.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday, RRM Director-General Johnson Georgewill accused former militant leader Alhaji Asari Dokubo, the President of the Ijaw National Congress, INC, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, and the National Publicity Secretary of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, High Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, of making remarks that endanger national security.

Georgewill described the statements as reckless and provocative, warning that no individual or group has a monopoly on violence. He urged security agencies to take immediate action, stressing that threats against Nigeria’s economy and stability must not be tolerated.

He also questioned why the same Ijaw leaders had not spoken up for the nine Ijaw lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, whom he claimed had been mistreated and denied their allowances by the Fubara administration for over a year.

While reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to constitutional democracy, Georgewill insisted that the Supreme Court’s ruling on the political crisis in Rivers must be respected. He urged the public to ignore what he termed baseless threats, emphasizing that the nation’s laws remain supreme.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, reassured residents that security agencies are fully prepared to handle any attempt to destabilize the state.

His assurance follows a warning from the Niger Delta Rescue Movement, a militant group that threatened to attack oil installations and urged non-indigenes to leave the state.

Adepoju, however, dismissed the threats, emphasizing that the police and other security forces are in control. He assured the public that Governor Fubara remains committed to peace and that law enforcement will not allow any escalation of tension.

Residents were urged to go about their daily activities without fear, as security remains a top priority.
