Amnesty International Nigeria has demanded a swift and impartial investigation into the killing of a footballer, Sani, by a police officer in Niger State. The tragic incident occurred at New Market, Sabon Gari, Chanchaga Local Government Area.

Sani was reportedly asleep at his friend’s tea stall when the officer, along with others, went on a shooting spree. Witnesses claim the policemen were heavily intoxicated, firing recklessly and endangering lives.

The young footballer’s sudden death has sparked outrage, with residents condemning the unchecked brutality of law enforcement officers. His burial took place on Monday, as calls for justice intensified.

Amnesty International has described the incident as part of a long-standing pattern of police misconduct in Nigeria. The organization pointed to cases of extrajudicial killings, harassment, torture, and extortion during routine patrols.

“For decades, Nigerian police have targeted youth with blatant disregard for the rule of law,” the rights group stated, emphasizing the need for urgent action.

Despite repeated promises of reform, Amnesty International insists that police officers continue to act with impunity. The organization accused authorities of failing to enforce accountability within the force.

The rights group has urged Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible to justice. It also called for immediate measures to curb police brutality and restore public trust in law enforcement.

Citizens and human rights activists are demanding concrete steps to prevent further abuses. Many believe that without genuine reforms, incidents like Sani’s killing will continue unchecked.
