A 50,000-litre gasoline tanker overturned while making a turn at Otedola Bridge in Lagos State on Tuesday night, causing an explosion.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:18 p.m. on Tuesday, though there have been no reports of casualties.

Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, confirmed the incident and stated that a multi-agency response plan had been activated to manage the overturned tanker and the fire that followed.

“We are working to extinguish the flames. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “The vehicle involved was a 50,000-litre tanker carrying gasoline, and the operation is still underway.”

This incident is reminiscent of a devastating explosion that occurred on June 28, 2018, on the same Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

A fuel-laden tanker reportedly lost control due to brake failure, overturning and spilling its contents. The fuel ignited, sparking a massive fire that engulfed several vehicles.

The 2018 explosion claimed at least 12 lives and injured several others. A total of 54 vehicles, including cars, buses, and trucks, were destroyed.

The explosion caused significant traffic disruptions and heightened concerns about tanker safety and regulations.

The tragedy led to calls for stricter regulations on tanker movement and enhanced safety measures on the roads.

The Otedola Bridge explosion remains one of the deadliest road accidents in Lagos, noted for the high number of fatalities and extensive damage.
