President Bola Tinubu has secured a major victory as the House of Representatives overwhelmingly backed his declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State. The lawmakers approved the move through a voice vote during Thursday’s plenary, despite widespread opposition from a section of the Nigerian public.
The President had on Tuesday suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months. The decision followed a prolonged political crisis that had destabilized governance in the oil-rich state. With the House’s approval, only the Senate’s endorsement remains before the full implementation of the emergency rule.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read the President’s letter requesting legislative approval, highlighting the urgency of the situation. During plenary, the request was put to a vote, with 240 lawmakers present—meeting the quorum requirement. The voice vote passed without any recorded opposition, further strengthening the President’s position on the matter.

If the Senate follows the House’s lead, former Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ibas, who was appointed as Sole Administrator, will assume full executive powers. His role will include restoring order and overseeing governance in Rivers State until the situation stabilizes. This appointment signals the federal government’s commitment to restoring political stability in the troubled state.
The move has sparked mixed reactions across the country, with critics questioning the legality and necessity of the suspension of elected officials. Supporters argue that the decision was essential to prevent further chaos and ensure the smooth functioning of government in Rivers State.
