The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has announced the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State.

This closure is to allow for extensive upgrades aimed at improving infrastructure and operational standards.

In a statement released on Sunday, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, confirmed that the closure was authorized by the Federal Government. The move is essential to facilitate crucial improvements at the airport.

The Nigeria Airspace Management Agency has closed the airport’s runway and suspended all operations, in line with regulations set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

This upgrade is part of the Oyo State Government’s broader efforts to elevate the airport to an international status.

FAAN emphasized that the closure is necessary to meet aviation safety standards, calling on stakeholders and passengers for their cooperation during this period.

The statement explained, “The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport due to ongoing upgrade works.

As part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative to transition Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international hub, various improvements and remodeling are being carried out. In adherence to aviation safety guidelines, the closure is vital to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.”
