Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti is set to stand trial over allegations of tax fraud in Spain. The case, which dates back to his first tenure at the club between 2013 and 2015, revolves around undeclared income from his image rights and other sources.

Prosecutors argue that he used a complex network of shell companies to avoid paying taxes on these earnings.

Ancelotti, a record-breaking five-time Champions League-winning coach, must appear in court for the hearings. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s next fixture, he downplayed the situation, stating that he trusted the legal system.

“This is not the place really to talk about it,” he said. “I have confidence in the legal and justice system, so I am not worried.”

Despite his composed response, the allegations weigh heavily. Prosecutors claim he only reported his salary from Real Madrid while residing in Spain but failed to declare additional earnings. In 2014, he reportedly made 1.24 million euros from image rights and 2.96 million euros in 2015. Spanish authorities believe he deliberately concealed these figures using offshore entities.

The investigation is part of Spain’s broader crackdown on tax evasion in football. Several high-profile figures, including Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, have faced similar legal battles in recent years. Both footballers received prison sentences, which were suspended as first-time offenders. Former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and Colombian singer Shakira have also settled tax disputes with Spanish authorities, with the latter agreeing to pay millions to avoid trial.

Ancelotti initially dismissed the case in 2023, calling it an “old story” that he hoped would soon be resolved. However, the Spanish courts proceeded with the charges and have now mandated his presence at trial. A date for the proceedings has not been set.

The Italian tactician, who left Real Madrid in 2015 before returning in 2021, has enjoyed immense success across Europe. Aside from Champions League triumphs with Real Madrid and AC Milan, he has secured domestic league titles in Spain, Italy, England, Germany, and France. His achievements, however, now share headlines with legal troubles that could tarnish his legacy.

Spain’s rigorous pursuit of financial transparency has placed football icons under intense scrutiny. With Ancelotti’s trial looming, the football world watches closely to see if he will clear his name or join the growing list of sporting figures entangled in tax fraud cases.
