In a significant step toward enhancing healthcare delivery in the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of the FCT, Mr. Nyesom Wike, has approved the recruitment of 34 resident doctors for a seven-year residency training program.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, made this announcement in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday. He explained that this recruitment marks the first phase of a larger plan to bring in a total of 60 medical doctors for residency training in eight specialized fields within FCT Administration hospitals.

According to Olayinka, the newly recruited doctors will be trained across multiple disciplines to strengthen medical expertise and improve patient care within the territory. The breakdown of the 34 doctors in the first batch includes five specialists in psychiatry, four in internal medicine, and one in general surgery. Additionally, one doctor will be trained in anaesthesiology, eight in family medicine, six in ophthalmology, and nine in obstetrics and gynaecology.

“This initiative is unprecedented as it is the first time such an extensive residency training program is being introduced outside the employment of the Health Management Board. It provides more opportunities for doctors and ensures that more competent hands are brought into the healthcare system in the FCT,” Olayinka stated.

He further disclosed that the remaining 26 doctors will be recruited in the near future through the FCT Administration (FCTA) Civil Service Commission. These additional doctors will further bolster specialized medical services, with one assigned to the psychiatry department, four to internal medicine, eight to general surgery, five to anaesthesiology, and eight to paediatrics.

The approval of this residency training program aligns with the FCT Administration’s broader commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and services. By expanding the number of trained medical professionals, the government aims to address critical gaps in specialized healthcare delivery, ensuring that residents of the FCT receive high-quality medical attention.

This development is expected to ease the workload of existing medical personnel, enhance service delivery in FCT hospitals, and ultimately contribute to a more efficient and responsive healthcare system in Nigeria’s capital.
