The police have addressed the ongoing speculations surrounding a bizarre and sacrilegious incident that occurred at the Agemo Shrine in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The event, which sent shockwaves through the ancient city and ignited a flurry of reactions both online and offline, involved a man named Jeremiah Nwoke.
He allegedly attempted to desecrate the sacred Agemo deity statue by cutting off and stealing its golden crown. The statue, commissioned more than 21 years ago, stands as a symbol of spiritual reverence at the Itoro Roundabout along Folagbade Road in Ijebu Ode.
The incident quickly attracted widespread attention, with rumours circulating that the alleged thief had died on the scene.
These claims spread rapidly on social media, evoking fear, awe, and outrage. However, the Ogun State Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, has clarified the situation and dispelled the rumours.
In a statement, SP Odutola confirmed that Jeremiah Nwoke is alive and currently in police custody.
She described the act as an alarming case of shrine desecration, revealing that Nwoke had attempted to sever the statue’s crown before being apprehended by police officers.
“A male adult, Jeremiah Nwoke, desecrated the revered Agemo Shrine by severing its crown, which has since been recovered and is now in safe custody at the Obalende Police Station,” she said.

Contrary to the viral rumors, Odutola emphasized that Nwoke was not struck dead at the scene.
Instead, he was subdued and rescued by the police, who acted swiftly to prevent what could have escalated into violent unrest among traditional worshippers. “Prompt police intervention calmed the situation and prevented further violence,” she added.
The police spokesperson also revealed that early evaluations suggest Nwoke may be experiencing mental health issues.
Psychological assessments are currently underway to determine his mental state. “Initial observations indicate signs of mental instability,” Odutola explained, assuring the public that the police are following due process in handling the case.
Although the motive behind the attempted theft remains unclear, the incident has stirred intense emotions and debate both within the Ijebu Ode community and beyond.
Many view it not only as a criminal act but also as an affront to centuries of sacred tradition and cultural heritage.
Calm has since returned to the area, with no further threats to public safety. Odutola reassured residents and visitors that the situation is under control, and the Ogun State Police Command remains committed to ensuring peace and order.
“Ijebu Ode is calm, and the public is assured of their safety as the investigation into the incident continues,” she concluded.
