A Finnish court has given nod to the extradition of Simon Ekpa to Nigeria, where he is set to face terrorism, incitement and conspiracy charges.

In a landmark ruling with significant implications for international justice and regional security, the Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti has approved the extradition of Simon Ekpa to Nigeria.

The decision, handed down on April 18, 2025, ends months of legal debates and diplomatic negotiations between both countries. The transfer is to be scheduled July 15, 2025.

Ekpa, a dual citizen of Nigeria and Finland, gained notoriety for his leadership of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, a splinter faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

He is accused of orchestrating and encouraging violence in Nigeria’s southeast through online broadcasts and directives issued from his residence in Finland.

He was arrested in 2024 following investigations by Finnish authorities into his alleged use of social media platforms to incite attacks on civilians, security personnel, and government institutions in Nigeria.

Several “sit-at-home” orders he issued were reportedly enforced through violence, leading to economic paralysis and civilian casualties in affected areas.

In addition to Ekpa, four others have been detained for their alleged roles in financing and facilitating his operations.

The court’s approval of the extradition came after Nigeria presented what was described in court as substantial evidence of Ekpa’s involvement in acts threatening national security.

The Finnish Ministry of Justice emphasized that the ruling complied fully with international legal standards, citing human rights protections and bilateral legal agreements.

Finland’s typically strict extradition laws—which restrict sending citizens outside the EU or Nordic region—were overridden on the basis of documented crimes, including targeted attacks and threats against the Nigerian state.

A senior official from Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence called the ruling a major victory for peace and justice. “This decision sends a clear message that no one can promote terror from abroad and expect impunity,” the official said.

Ekpa is expected to face charges including terrorism, conspiracy, and incitement of violence. His trial, set to be closely watched by human rights groups and diplomatic observers, could become one of Nigeria’s most high-profile legal proceedings in recent years.

The Nigerian government has expressed readiness to ensure a fair trial, stating its commitment to upholding international legal and human rights standards throughout the process.
