An 18-year-old apprentice in Anambra State is at the center of a growing social concern after reportedly impregnating 10 girls prompting a public appeal for solutions from the state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.

The startling revelation was made by Commissioner Obinabo during a live video streamed on social media, where she described the situation as overwhelming and called on the public for suggestions, saying it had surpassed the capacity of her office.

According to her account, the boy was originally sent to a city to learn a trade under a master. Within just three months of beginning his apprenticeship, he allegedly impregnated both his master’s daughter and a salesgirl working at their shop. As a result, he was sent back to his village in Anambra.

What followed shocked the commissioner further. Within two months of his return, the teenager allegedly impregnated eight more girls in his local community, raising the total number of reported pregnancies linked to him to ten.

“This matter is beyond me,” Obinabo said, her tone reflecting deep concern. “This boy was sent to learn a trade at the age of 18, and within three months, he had impregnated two girls. Then, after returning to the village, he impregnated eight others. I need the public to help me come up with a solution.”

The boy’s mother, clearly distressed by the situation, reportedly visited the commissioner to seek assistance. She was quoted as saying, “Anytime I see a girl walking towards our house, my heart skips.”

Obinabo questioned whether the teenager’s behavior might have a spiritual or psychological basis, given his age and the frequency of the alleged incidents. However, she withheld the boy’s name, the community involved, and other identifying details to protect the privacy of those affected.

The boy, when asked how he managed to convince the girls, allegedly responded that he simply professed love to them and promised to marry them once he became successful in life.

Obinabo emphasized the need for urgent intervention, not only for the young man but also for the girls and their families.

She noted that her office is considering various approaches, including counseling and rehabilitation, and welcomed suggestions from the public on how best to address the situation.

The bizarre nature of the case has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with users proposing a mix of spiritual, psychological, and legal interventions. Some called for the boy to undergo counseling and therapy, while others highlighted the need for better sexual education and family guidance at the community level.

As the debate continues, the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs is expected to consult experts and stakeholders to formulate a comprehensive response plan to what many have described as both a public health and social crisis.
