The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, has announced that the fully renovated Abuja International Conference Centre, AICC, will be the first project to be commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in celebration of his second year in office.
Wike made the disclosure on Friday during an inspection of the project site in Abuja, where he lauded the contractor, Julius Berger, for adhering strictly to the agreed schedule and maintaining high standards of construction.
He praised the company’s efficiency in handling both the AICC refurbishment and the ongoing extension of the Obafemi Awolowo Way, from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III.
The AICC, originally constructed in 1991, had significantly deteriorated over the years. According to Wike, the structure was in such a deplorable state that it no longer qualified as a modern international venue—until President Tinubu ordered its complete rehabilitation and upgrade.

“It is surprising that for over three decades, no administration made any meaningful attempt to give this vital national asset a facelift,” Wike stated. “It took the decisive leadership of President Tinubu to prioritise this project. Today, the centre has been transformed into a world-class facility.”
Describing the upgraded conference centre as a reflection of effective governance, Wike emphasized that no serious leader would allow the nation’s capital to showcase such a vital institution in its former state.
The minister also affirmed that other key infrastructural projects in the FCT—including the Obafemi Awolowo Way extension—are on track to be completed and could feature among the lineup of projects for President Tinubu’s second anniversary in office.
“This is what the Renewed Hope Agenda is all about—taking critical infrastructure seriously and delivering results. The commitment to quality we’re seeing from Julius Berger is commendable and mirrors our vision for a modern and efficient capital city,” Wike concluded.
