The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, leadership has officially reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as its National Secretary.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the party, during a press briefing attended by top-ranking stakeholders.
The decision comes after a prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP, particularly centered around the national secretary position. Anyanwu, a known political ally of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, had faced resistance from certain factions within the party over his return.
Speaking at the briefing, Damagum acknowledged the complexity surrounding the decision. He noted that while it was a difficult call, it was ultimately endorsed by the majority of the party’s organs and stakeholders.
Key figures such as Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and former Senate President Bukola Saraki were present to show solidarity.
“We had to weigh the opinions of party stakeholders carefully,” Damagum stated. “Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary, and that is why I said it was a critical decision.”

Amid the leadership change, Damagum also announced the cancellation of the party’s previously scheduled National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting. Instead, the PDP will convene an expanded caucus meeting on June 30 to chart a new course.
This latest move follows months of internal squabbles, with Anyanwu’s return sparking protests among the party’s staff. Just a day earlier, workers at the PDP National Secretariat had staged a walkout in protest of his reemergence, accusing him of attempting to reclaim the office forcefully.
Insiders alleged that Anyanwu entered the building accompanied by aides and loyalists in an effort to take control, leading staff to vacate their offices en masse.
While the PDP leadership has remained silent on that incident, it underscores the depth of the crisis facing the opposition party.
Acting Chairman Damagum maintained that all future decisions, including a rescheduled NEC meeting, will be taken in the best interest of party unity.
As Anyanwu officially resumes duties, attention will now shift to whether the decision can ease tensions or further deepen the rift within the PDP’s ranks.
More details are expected as the party prepares for its expanded caucus meeting on June 30.
