The Yoruba film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Shina, the only son of veteran actress Peju Ogunmola.

The heartbreaking incident reportedly occurred while Ogunmola, 56, was on a movie set. Shina, described as a bright young man with a promising future, had just completed his National Youth Service Corps  programme — a milestone that filled his mother with pride only weeks ago.

His sudden passing has left the family and colleagues in shock, with tributes pouring in across social media and within the Nollywood community.

Many described the loss as not only devastating to the Omobolanle family but also a painful blow to Yoruba cinema, where Peju Ogunmola has long been respected for her craft and humility.

Peju Ogunmola is one of the most respected faces in the Yoruba movie industry, with a career spanning decades.

She is the daughter of the late theatre legend, Kola Ogunmola, who was a pioneer in Yoruba theatre and left an indelible mark on Nigerian performing arts.

Carrying on her father’s legacy, she carved her niche in Nollywood through numerous stage plays and Yoruba-language films, earning recognition for her versatility and strong screen presence.

Married to Sunday Omobolanle (Papi Luwe), another heavyweight in comedy and Yoruba film, the actress has been part of some of the most celebrated Yoruba productions and is widely admired for her dedication to the craft.

Her loss is particularly painful to fans and colleagues who have seen her family as a pillar in Nollywood.

Prominent Nollywood stars and fans have taken to Instagram to console the grieving actress.

Actor Femi Branch wrote: “Aunty mi, only God can comfort you. This is too much, and no parent would wish this on another parent. God will hold and comfort you, ma.”

In the same vein, Femi Adebayo expressed: “Life has written a line too heavy for the stage… Today, we mourn with our dear elder, a thespian whose heart now carries the weight no mother should bear. My thoughts and prayers are with you, ma. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus.”

Actress Wumi Toriola lamented: “This candle is toooooooo dark to light. God, please comfort her. This is heart-wrenching, olorun oooo.”

Similarly, Biola Adebayo described the loss as catastrophic: “This is a big loss; this is devastating and heartbreaking, truly tragic. May God Almighty comfort mummy Peju Ogunmola who just lost her only child. May God Almighty be with the family and loved ones in this tough time.”

Star actress Toyin Abraham also penned an emotional message: “My heart is shattered…I’m sending all my love, strength, and prayers in this unbearable moment. May God hold you and your family close, ma.”

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but support for the Omobolanle family has been overwhelming as colleagues, friends, and fans continue to rally around them in this time of grief
