Macron slams Russia’s incursion to Poland as unacceptable

French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned the incursion of more than a dozen Russian drones into Polish airspace, describing the violation as “simply unacceptable.”

The incident, which marks the first time Russian drones have been shot down over NATO territory, has heightened concerns about European security and the risks of Russia’s war in Ukraine spilling into neighboring countries.

Macron, in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), urged Moscow to put an end to what he called a “headlong rush” into dangerous escalation.

He expressed solidarity with both the Polish population and their government, reaffirming France’s commitment to NATO unity in the face of threats along the alliance’s eastern flank.

According to Polish officials, the country’s air force successfully destroyed more than a dozen drones that crossed into its airspace late Tuesday during Russia’s overnight strikes on Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the drones originated from Russia, underlining the seriousness of the violation.

While no casualties were reported, local authorities said several properties sustained damage.

“This is a deeply troubling moment,” Tusk said, noting that while Poland has long anticipated the possibility of Russian weapons straying into its airspace, this was the first confirmed case of Russian drones being shot down over NATO territory.

“Poland remains vigilant, and we will take every measure necessary to defend our sovereignty.”

The incursion immediately triggered alarm within the NATO alliance, whose Article 5 provision states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

Although Polish authorities have not framed the incident as a deliberate attack on NATO, the escalation underscores the precarious balance between Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine and the security of bordering nations.

France, which has consistently called for stronger European defense cooperation, sees the latest development as a wake-up call.

Macron has previously warned against complacency in the face of Russian aggression, and his latest remarks reflected growing frustration with Moscow’s disregard for international norms.

“Europe must stand firm. Every violation of our sovereignty, every attack on international law, is an attack on our collective security,” Macron stressed.

Security analysts say the incursion could lead to discussions within NATO about enhanced air defense systems in frontline states such as Poland, Lithuania, and Romania.

The alliance has already bolstered its eastern defenses since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, deploying additional troops, air defense units, and surveillance capabilities.

Russia has increasingly relied on drone warfare in its campaign against Ukraine, often targeting critical infrastructure, residential areas, and military facilities.

These drones, many of which are Iranian-made Shahed models, have posed persistent challenges for Ukrainian defenses and now threaten to destabilize bordering regions.

As of Wednesday, Polish emergency teams were still assessing the extent of damage caused by falling debris. Meanwhile, European leaders have pledged to monitor the situation closely and stand by Poland.

For Macron, the message was clear: “Russia’s reckless actions must end before they drag all of Europe into greater danger.”
