“DSS confirms the release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a few hours ago ,” said DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya.
In the aftermath of his release, a video of the former EFCC chief being greeted by his wives and children went viral on social media.
His release came months after President Bola Tinubu removed him as chairman of the anti-corruption agency.
According to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation , SGF, Bawa’s suspension was the result of serious allegations of abuse of office leveled against him.
Willie Bassey, Director of Information at the SGF office, stated that the move was made to allow for a thorough investigation into the allegations.
Following his suspension and June 14 arrest by the DSS, former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle accused Bawa of seeking a $2 million bribe from him.
However, the ex-EFCC chief denied the allegations made by the Minister of State for Defence.
While Tinubu directed the Commission’s Director of Operations, Abdulkarim Chukkol, to act as acting chair of the EFCC, the Nigerian leader named Ola Olukoyede as the agency’s chief on October 12.
According to presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, Olukoyede’s appointment is for a four-year renewable term in the first instance.
Ajuri stated that the appointment came after Bawa’s resignation, with Olukoyede’s confirmation arriving about a week later.
