The move to impeach the state governor and the purportedly orchestrated leadership crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly have been denounced by the Ijaw People’s Assembly, IPA, also known as the Ijaw National Development Group, INDG.
The people of the Niger Delta region are concerned that Governor Fubara, who was widely accepted during the last elections and has only been in office for five months, could be the target of a political coup by some power-hungry individuals in the state. This is in addition to the threat that the political unrest on Sunday poses to the peace and security of Rivers State, according to the INDG.
In a statement released on Monday, Prof. Prosper Ayawei, the president of the Ijaw National Development Group ,Ijaw Peoples Assembly, urged all parties involved, especially Chief Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to use caution and resolve any current conflicts without destabilizing Rivers State.
The INDG claims that because of ego and greed, Rivers State—which under former Governor Wike had developed into a model state for democracy with excellent infrastructure projects—should not become a hotbed of violent conflicts.
The statement said, “We are shocked that the political actors are out to destroy the achievements recorded in Rivers State.”
“We urge prudence and a cooperative resolution of matters that could have sparked the crisis. We implore all parties involved in Rivers State to support Governor Fubara in his fight against any forces hostile to democracy. We demand a peaceful resolution.
The group also demanded that the Rivers State House of Assembly’s Speaker and leadership reverse their decision to suspend Hon. Edison Ehie, the majority leader, and to send Governor Siminalayi Fubara a notice of impeachment.
The group issued a warning, saying that the Ijaw nation is keeping an eye on the events in Rivers and would not put up a fight to uphold the governor’s mandate—an Ijaw man.
