An Irish chef based in Japan, Alan Fisher, has accomplished an incredible feat by breaking two Guinness World Records, GWR, for the longest cooking marathon by an individual. The Guinness World Records made the announcement via its website.
Fisher cooked continuously for an astounding 119 hours and 57 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 93 hours and 11 minutes set by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci earlier in the year.
Hilda’s record attempt, titled “Cook-a-thon,” started on May 11, 2023, and she initially aimed to cook for 96 hours but later extended her goal to a 100-hour cooking marathon.
On May 15, 2023, Hilda broke the previous record by cooking for 87 hours and 50 minutes. High-profile Nigerians, including the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and the former Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, visited Hilda during the cook-a-thon.
However, Fisher’s remarkable achievement also included breaking the record for the longest baking marathon, during which he baked for 47 hours and 21 minutes, surpassing the prior record of 31 hours and 16 minutes. Notably, Fisher undertook both record attempts back-to-back, spending over 160 hours straight in the kitchen.
Fisher’s restaurant, Kyojin Stewhouse in Tokyo, was the venue for his record-breaking feats. He served traditional Irish meals and undertook these challenges as a means of recovering from the pandemic’s hardships that had nearly forced his business to close.
In his quest for the records, Fisher prepared an astonishing amount of food, including over 550 kg and 3,360 portions of 32 Irish recipes. Fisher expressed gratitude for the support he received from his local community, which helped him persevere through fatigue and even hallucinations.
He stated, “I was representing myself, my family, and Irish food, and sharing our story. I couldn’t give up. That was the only option.” Guinness World Records applauded Fisher’s “incredible feat of endurance.”
