The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra ,IPOB, has accused the Department of State Services ,DSS, of denying him access to visitors.
According to the family, this denial is an attempt to conceal Kanu’s deteriorating health condition from those who wish to visit him.
The Abuja High Court had previously ordered the DSS to permit Kanu unfettered access to his family and lawyers twice a week.
However, the family claims that, on Thursday, none of the visitors who attempted to see him were allowed access, in what they see as a blatant violation of the court order.
Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu, expressed concern over the DSS’s sudden decision to deny access, describing it as a “flagrant violation of a subsisting court order.”
The family alleges that this action raises suspicions that the DSS may be attempting to hide information about Kanu’s health.
Emmanuel Kanu criticized the DSS, stating, “For me, DSS has become a private security company where the authority manages it as his personal family business.
I’m yet to know why my brother is still currently in detention against court orders.”
Despite a court order from the Appeal Court in Abuja for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release, the Federal Government has not released the IPOB leader.
Kanu has been in solitary confinement at the Abuja DSS headquarters since his abduction in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria in June 2021.
