In a surprising turn of events, the aviation industry workers have refrained from participating in the ongoing nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress , NLC, and the Trade Union Congress , TUC.
This unexpected decision has left many questioning the dynamics within the aviation sector.
The genesis of this labor unrest traces back to the assault on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, which prompted the Organised Labour to declare an indefinite nationwide strike.
Addressing the media at the NLC National Secretariat in Abuja, TUC President Festus Osifo emphasized that the strike would persist until governments at all levels acknowledge and fulfill their responsibilities.

The directives were clear, and the call for mobilization echoed across various sectors.
However, as the strike gained momentum across the nation, the aviation industry, a crucial player in the country’s economic landscape, chose not to immediately join the industrial action.
The General Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Air Transport Employees , NUATE , Comrade Ocheme Aba, shed light on the aviation unions’ stance, stating that they would not be part of the initial wave of the strike. Aba emphasized that their decision was not absolute, hinting that future developments could influence their participation.
Aba hinted at a pragmatic approach, stating, “None of us is joining the action immediately. But, we will look at how events unfold to know if we will join the action later, but as it stands, we are not joining in the action immediately.”
Sources suggest that the aviation unions’ delay in participating in the nationwide strike might be linked to the imminent Annual General Meeting of NUATE, scheduled to commence in Benin, the capital of Edo State, on Wednesday.
The intricate dynamics within the aviation sector and the broader labor landscape add an element of uncertainty to the unfolding situation.
As the nation observes the unfolding events, the aviation industry’s decision to momentarily stay on the sidelines adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing nationwide strike, leaving many to ponder the intricate dynamics influencing this critical sector’s stance.
