In an exclusive interview with NTA, former President Muhammadu Buhari addressed several critical issues, shedding light on his decision-making, governance challenges and his post-presidential life.

One of the notable topics discussed was the approval of the controversial Naira redesign policy, which contributed to a cash crunch crisis in the country. Buhari explained that he endorsed the policy to protect his integrity, emphasizing that he believed it was the right course of action for the nation.

Reflecting on his 2015 election victory, the former president credited divine intervention and shared insights into the challenges faced by Nigeria as an underdeveloped country, particularly grappling with materialism. He highlighted the difficulty of governing Nigerians, noting their tendency to resist following what they perceive as the right course of action.

Buhari said: “God gave me the opportunity to serve my country, but I did my best. But whether my best was good enough, I leave for people to judge.”

Responding to criticism about the integrity of individuals within his government during his eight-year tenure, Buhari dismissed the accusations, attributing them to the issues of critics. He questioned the efforts of those criticizing his administration, particularly in combating corruption at their respective levels.

Addressing an incident involving Ethiopian and Nigerian Air at the end of his administration, Buhari admitted a shortcoming in giving people a free hand to do their work. This acknowledgment reflects a willingness to reflect on the challenges faced during his presidency.

Despite the complexities of governance, Buhari expressed contentment with his post-presidential life. When asked if he missed anything about being in government, he maintained that he did not, signaling a sense of fulfillment in his current phase of life.

The interview provides a glimpse into the thoughts and perspectives of the former president, offering insights into key decisions and challenges faced during his tenure and shedding light on his contentment with life beyond the presidency.
