In a daring attack on Thursday night, unidentified gunmen ambushed the convoy of Anambra State-born politician and businessman, Chris Uba, in his hometown of Uga.
The assailants engaged in a fatal gun battle with the police, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including police officers.
The incident occurred at Uga junction in Aguata Local Government Area, where the gunmen intercepted Uba’s convoy. Despite riding in a bulletproof vehicle, the attackers unleashed violence, leading to a deadly confrontation with law enforcement.
Anambra Police Command’s spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, issued a statement in response to the incident. He revealed that armed insurgents infiltrated from a neighboring state, launching an attack that claimed the lives of two police personnel on December 28, 2023.
The assailants, disguised in military fatigue and seemingly on a kidnap mission, encountered two armed police officers approaching their direction. A fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, with other police personnel returning fire strategically to avoid harm to motorists caught in the traffic gridlock. The attackers eventually fled the scene.
In a swift response, the police-led Mobile Forward Operating Base, which had been intensively patrolling the area during the Christmas celebrations, arrived at the scene. They recovered a Lexus SUV used by the gang and successfully defused an improvised explosive device found in the vehicle. Additionally, an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the slain personnel was recovered.
The Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers and the Enugu State Police Command. He urged Anambra State Police Command personnel not to be demoralized by the tragic loss but to draw inspiration from their colleagues’ bravery. The CP emphasized that the slain personnel would not die in vain and reassured that technology would be employed to track down the criminals responsible for the attack on police personnel.
