Africa’s first black female athlete to win gold at the Olympics, Derartu Tulu, will now be featured on postage stamps in her home country Ethiopia.
Today in the capital, Addis Ababa, stamps were revealed to commemorate International Women’s Day.
These stamps depict various moments in Derartu Tulu’s career, including her first Olympic victory in 1992 in Barcelona when she was only 20 years old. Derartu is a significant figure in Ethiopia and has served as the president of the Ethiopian Athletics Federation, EAF, since November 2018.

Derartu Tulu’s Olympic achievements are also celebrated, including her gold medals in the 10,000m races at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as well as a bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
In Ethiopia, Derartu joins esteemed athletes like Abebe Bikila and Haile Gebrselassie who have been commemorated with stamps for their remarkable contributions to sports.
