The Chairman of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, announced plans to appeal a recent Federal High Court ruling that upheld the Julius Abure-led leadership of the party.
Usman, in a statement released on Tuesday, confirmed that she had met with key figures in the party, including its 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, to discuss the judgment and next steps.
The court judgment validated the party’s Nnewi Convention, which took place before the formation of Usman’s Caretaker Committee. Despite this, the leaders agreed to challenge the ruling, with Usman urging party members to remain calm and continue efforts toward reconciliation.

Meanwhile, Abure, whose leadership was affirmed by the court, extended an olive branch to Peter Obi and other stakeholders, seeking to unite the party and heal divisions. In his statement, Abure emphasized forgiveness but also called for reflection, repentance, and restitution from those who had undermined the party’s leadership. He expressed optimism for the party’s future, stating that the judgment would usher in a new era of restructuring, healing, and growth.
The Labour Party’s leadership crisis had escalated after Obi and other key figures recently formed a caretaker committee to address disputes over the legitimacy of Abure’s national executive. The Nnewi Convention, which ratified Abure’s leadership, lacked the presence of key stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission, which contributed to the internal conflict.
With the court’s decision now in place, party leaders and members await further developments, with hopes that Abure’s peace offer will pave the way for unity and progress within the Labour Party.
