German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has officially arrived in Nigeria.
His flight touched down on Tuesday night, marking the beginning of his official visit. Upon arrival, he was warmly welcomed at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
President Steinmeier’s visit, which is scheduled to last until December 12, 2024, is set to include a wide range of diplomatic and cultural engagements. One of the key highlights will be his meeting with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, during which the two leaders are expected to discuss matters of mutual interest, including bilateral relations and cooperation on regional issues.
Additionally, Steinmeier is scheduled to hold talks with the President of the Economic Community of West African States , ECOWAS, Alieu Omar Touray, among other notable figures.

After concluding his activities in Abuja, the German President will travel to Lagos, where he will engage with representatives from the business community. He will also visit a prominent start-up hub, reflecting his interest in Nigeria’s growing entrepreneurial landscape. Another significant aspect of his trip will be his interactions with Nigeria’s cultural sector and civil society.
Among those he is expected to meet are renowned Nigerian artist Dr. Nike Okundaye and Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, whose contributions to the cultural and intellectual life of the country are internationally acclaimed.
President Steinmeier will also have the opportunity to explore Lagos itself, taking a tour of the city to gain a deeper understanding of its dynamic urban development.
The tour will provide insights into the challenges faced by this megacity, particularly in areas such as environmental sustainability, infrastructure development, and social issues, offering the German President a comprehensive view of the opportunities and obstacles that come with managing one of Africa’s largest and most vibrant cities.
