Nigeria’s female U-19 cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, has advanced to the Super 6 stage of the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.

They will face England and Ireland in the next round. Although the Junior Female Yellow Greens suffered a 41-run defeat (DLS method) to South Africa on Wednesday.

Their historic two-run victory over New Zealand on Monday and a shared point against Samoa were enough to secure their place as the second-best team in Group C.

This was the second encounter between Nigeria and South Africa in women’s cricket in the past year. Nigeria’s captain, Piety Lucky, won the toss and chose to field first.

South Africa made a strong start, with Simone Lourens hitting four boundaries, but she was dismissed by Lucky in the seventh over before rain reduced the game to eight overs.

After the delay, Lucky struck again, removing Kayla Reyneke, and South Africa finished their innings at 49 for 2. Nigeria’s chase faltered as they managed only 24 for 8, despite the best efforts of their players.

Despite the loss, Nigeria will continue their historic run as they take on England on Saturday, January 25, and Ireland on Wednesday, January 29, in the Super 6 stage. England and Ireland finished first and third in Group B, respectively.

The Junior Female Yellow Greens will need a strong performance in the upcoming matches to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.
