The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND, Mr. Sonny Echono has urged federal and state governments to grant full autonomy to universities, emphasizing that operational independence is crucial for quality education.
Speaking at the 9th convocation lecture of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Echono stressed that universities must be free to carry out their core mandates—teaching, research, and community service—without excessive government control.
He explained that while the government’s policy allows some level of autonomy, universities remain under the influence of governing councils, limiting their ability to make independent decisions.
He maintained that full autonomy would enable universities to enhance infrastructure, collaborate with industries and alumni, and engage in global partnerships for academic growth.
“Autonomy strengthens institutions, allowing them to build networks, improve facilities, and exchange knowledge globally,” he said.
Echono also highlighted the role of academic freedom in promoting innovation and improving performance, noting that a more independent university system would drive national development.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, praised the guest speaker and acknowledged TETFUND’s contributions to the institution’s growth. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing quality education despite economic challenges.
