Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly after the resignation of Mojisola Meranda.
The development took place during Monday’s plenary session, shortly after Obasa had a meeting with lawmakers.
Obasa’s reinstatement comes after a tumultuous period in January, when he was impeached by the lawmakers over several allegations, including poor leadership, frequent lateness to sessions, abuse of office, and intimidation of fellow members.
The impeachment, which saw over 90% of the lawmakers supporting the motion, was a significant political moment in the state’s legislative history.
In response to his impeachment, Obasa rejected the process, asserting that the lawmakers did not adhere to constitutional procedures when attempting to remove him from office.
He also denied the corruption allegations that were levied against him, calling the claims of financial mismanagement “impossible.”
During a statement following his impeachment, Obasa emphasized his belief that he remained the rightful speaker, insisting that any attempt to remove him must be done according to the law. “If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it,” he stated.

Efforts to resolve the leadership crisis in the Assembly were spearheaded by key All Progressives Congress figures, including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode.
These interventions, directed by President Bola Tinubu, culminated in a reconciliation meeting on Monday, where Meranda tendered her resignation, alongside other principal executives of the Assembly.
In her resignation notice, Meranda formally stepped down from the position of Speaker. Obasa’s reinstatement followed shortly thereafter, marking a return to leadership.
Addressing the assembly during the plenary, Obasa expressed gratitude to the lawmakers for their support and emphasized the importance of unity. “We want to assure Lagosians that we have resolved and are determined to serve their interests and protect them at all times,” he said.
Obasa also spoke about the integrity of the Lagos State House of Assembly, highlighting the ability of the institution to resolve internal conflicts in a manner that upholds its credibility and the interests of the people. “Today is not the day for speech-making, but to celebrate my colleagues and thank them for all they have been doing,” he said, calling for continued cooperation and harmony among the members.
The reinstatement of Obasa as Speaker is seen as a significant political development, ensuring stability in the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly moving forward.
