The Federal Road Safety Corps has called, FRSC, on Nigerians to comply with traffic laws to curb the rising rate of road crashes and fatalities across the country.
FRSC spokesman, Olusegun Ogungbemide, made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja, emphasizing that public cooperation is essential to ensuring a safer motoring environment.
He expressed concern over the high number of casualties recorded on Nigerian roads, attributing the trend to reckless driving, overloading, and disregard for traffic regulations.
Ogungbemide lamented that many road users operate with impunity, ignoring traffic laws that are meant to protect lives. He pointed out that developed countries with safer road systems achieved such milestones through
Expressing concern over the increasing number of casualties on Nigerian roads, Ogungbemide attributed the trend to impunity and disregard for traffic laws. He revealed that the corps had recorded a high number of crashes and fatalities caused by reckless driving, overloading, and mix loading.
Ogungbemide stressed that countries celebrated for their development and road safety did not achieve such progress without public cooperation. He noted that these nations have well-developed traffic systems and laws that are strictly enforced and followed by citizens.
“The western countries we celebrate today didn’t just get to where they are without the support of the public. Any society where the laws prevail does so with public cooperation. When laws exist but are not obeyed, chaos takes over,” he said.
He emphasized that Nigeria could replicate the same level of road safety and development if citizens complied with traffic regulations.

The FRSC spokesman also warned against “mix loading” and overloading, which he identified as leading causes of road crashes and fatalities.
“The laws are there; let us take our time to comply with them and not shortchange them. Lives are very precious, no matter how cheap we think they are,” he stated.
Ogungbemide further criticized the attitude of Nigerians who obey traffic laws abroad but disregard them at home, saying such behavior contributes to the high number of casualties on Nigerian roads.
“When we go out there, we abide by their laws, but when we come back here, it becomes all commerce and affairs. We treat our laws with impunity, and that’s why we have the high rate of casualties we are experiencing on our highways,” he added.
Ogungbemide reassured the public that the corps would continue to enforce traffic laws and regulations, urging road users to cooperate with FRSC personnel.
He appealed for public support to help the corps achieve its goal of reducing crashes and fatalities on Nigerian roads.
“We need the support of the public to do the right thing. It brings harmony, security, and safety for all. Every year, we lose so many people who could have been saved if we simply followed traffic rules,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to take responsibility for road safety by obeying laws designed to protect lives and prevent unnecessary loss.
