Hearing in the suit filed by the reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa has been adjourned to March 10.

Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 over allegations of fraud, high-handedness, abuse of office, and gross misconduct, is contesting the legality of his removal. The suit names members of the state assembly and former speaker, Mojisola Meranda, as respondents.

At the hearing on Friday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro at Ikeja High Court ordered all parties to file and serve their processes before the next adjourned date. She emphasized that all applications, including Obasa’s originating summons, would be heard on March 10.

Obasa’s lead counsel, Afolabi Fasanu maintained that the case remains valid despite his client’s reinstatement, arguing that the speaker was denied a fair hearing. He stressed that Obasa is still grappling with the allegations that led to his removal.

In response, counsel for the 34 lawmakers, Romeo Ese-Michael insisted that the case was not over, as the lawmakers had filed a counterclaim. They are seeking a court declaration affirming Obasa’s impeachment as constitutional, in line with Section 92 of the 1999 Constitution.

Obasa was reinstated as speaker on March 3 after Meranda stepped down from the position. Despite his return, the legal tussle over the legitimacy of his impeachment continues.
