President Bola Tinubu has approved over N700 billion in 2025 for disbursement to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund,TETFund.
The allocation will support infrastructure development, research, and academic training across the beneficiary institutions.
At the 2025 Strategic Planning Meeting in Abuja, TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono disclosed that 91.08 percent of the fund is earmarked for direct disbursement, comprising 48.90 percent for annual allocation and 42.18 percent for special interventions.
Additionally, 8.72 percent will go to designated projects, while 0.20 percent is reserved for stabilization funds.
Based on this structure, universities will each receive N2.8 billion, polytechnics N1.9 billion, and colleges of education N2.1 billion as their annual direct disbursement. These funds are expected to drive improvements in learning environments and academic programs.
Echono emphasized that government has prioritized upgrading, rehabilitating, and renovating deteriorating infrastructure in tertiary institutions. He noted that all 2025 allocations for physical infrastructure development will focus on restoring and modernizing existing facilities.
Hr advised heads of institution to plan ahead by engaging their consultancy and physical planning units to ensure seamless execution of projects.
TETFund expects beneficiary institutions to have their proposals ready for the current disbursement cycle.

Beyond infrastructure, the fund has increased its allocations for research, innovation, academic staff training, and the development of manuscripts and books. Echono noted that more institutions have also been added to the list of beneficiaries under special and designated projects.
To maximize the impact of the funding, he advised institutions to work closely with their communities and stakeholders in executing TETFund projects. Ensuring transparency and timely payments to contractors and vendors will be key to avoiding project delays.
He also called on tertiary institutions to fully utilize their 2024 and previous allocations before seeking new funds. Speeding up the procurement process will be crucial for institutions to access their 2025 disbursements without delays.
The 2025 allocation aligns with the Education Sector Road Map under President Tinubu’s administration, championed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. The roadmap prioritizes strengthening higher education to drive national development.
With this significant investment, Nigeria’s tertiary institutions are expected to witness substantial improvements in infrastructure, academic research, and staff development, reinforcing the country’s commitment to advancing education.
