Efforts to restore peace and stability in Borno State have received a boost as the United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to supporting development in Nigeria’s insurgency-hit Northeast. The British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Gill Atkinson, gave this assurance during a courtesy visit to the Borno State Government House in Maiduguri.

Atkinson commended Governor Babagana Zulum’s administration for its dedication to tackling insurgency and securing a prosperous future for displaced residents. She emphasized the UK government’s recognition of these efforts and its continued support for initiatives aimed at rebuilding communities affected by conflict.

She highlighted the UK’s involvement in regional stabilisation programs, particularly its contributions to the Regional Stabilisation Facility. This initiative focuses on rehabilitating communities, restoring livelihoods, and fostering economic recovery in conflict-hit areas.

Receiving the envoy on behalf of the governor, Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijjani, conveyed deep appreciation for the UK’s longstanding partnership. He described the collaboration as instrumental in addressing humanitarian needs and stabilisation efforts across various sectors in the state.

Tijjani noted that Borno State has been implementing strategic policies to resettle displaced persons, revive agriculture, and rebuild critical infrastructure. He stressed that these efforts align with the broader goal of ensuring long-term stability and economic resilience in the region.

The UK remains a key development partner in Nigeria’s Northeast, supporting humanitarian assistance and initiatives aimed at restoring normalcy to communities devastated by a decade-long insurgency. With ongoing collaboration, both governments aim to sustain progress in rebuilding lives and fostering sustainable peace in Borno State.
